About Nettwerk
Since it started in 1984, Nettwerk Music Group has evolved from a small Canadian label into a global entity in the independent music scene. It originally focused on electronic genres like alternative dance and industrial, but by the late 1980s and 1990s, it had expanded into pop, rock, and singer-songwriter music. Over the years, Nettwerk has helped launch the careers of artists like Sarah McLachlan, Barenaked Ladies, and Dido. In 2023, the company recapitalized to invest more in catalog acquisitions and artist development, reinforcing its dedication to growth and innovation. Billboard featured Nettwerk Music in its Indie Power Players list in 2024, as it recognizes the company's influence and success in the independent music industry.

Nettwerk’s target audience is pretty diverse, reflecting the wide range of genres and artists it represents. However, their primary target audience tends to be young adults, around the age of 18-35 years old. Nettwerk attracts listeners who appreciate independent music, especially those drawn to indie pop, folk, alternative rock, and electronic. Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratifications theory suggests that audiences actively seek media that fulfills their personal needs, whether for entertainment, self-identity, or social interaction. Nettwerk appeals to this by offering authentic and emotionally resonant music, allowing listeners to connect with artists on a deeper level. They attract their target audience by leveraging on streaming platforms (like Spotify, YouTube, and Instagram), to engage with fans through posting interactive posts and contents. Furthermore, artists from Nettwerk often maintain an authentic and down-to-earth image (real persona), which focuses more on building connections rather that mass-market appeal. With its unique approach and broad lineup, Nettwerk also appeals to fans looking for something authentic and original.

One of Nettwerk's most successful product was managing Sarah McLachlan’s career, as her album 'Surfacing' has sold more than 2 million copies and won multiple Grammy Awards. Nettwerk also played an important role in bringing Coldplay’s debut album, 'Parachutes', to North America, which helps set the stage for their success worldwide.

Reflection : Although at first, I didn't expect this research to offer much benefit to our project, these research are proven to be highly valuable. It’s deepened my understanding of how pop music videos are developed, marketed, and personalized to appeal to specific audiences. By researching about these companies, I was able to identify effective conventions, visual styles, and promotional strategies that are effective within the pop and indie pop genre, which are essential insights to create a music video that not only aligns with genre expectations but also resonates with our target audiences. Additionally, this research has been beneficial my group, as it offers guide for constructing a music video with genre-specific appeal. It also helps us incorporate elements that fulfill our audiences' need for identity, connection, and entertainment, aligning with Blumler and Katz's Uses and Gratification Theory.

The reason why I added another research for indie pop's company is because initially, my team and I was contemplating on whether to use songs from pop or indie pop genre. Therefore, I decided to research about companies that produces pop genre music. However, we eventually decided to cover the music from an indie pop genre so, I decided to conduct one research from this genre to be able to understand it better.
